About John

I didn’t set out to become a counselor who specializes in sexual and pornography compulsions, betrayal trauma, and recovery. Life set me on that path long before I had the training to back it up.

I picked up pornography as a teenager the way a lot of guys do — as a way to numb something I didn’t have words for yet. It became a habit that followed me quietly into adulthood, tucked into the corners of a life that from the outside looked like it was building toward something good: two decades in ministry, a marriage, a calling I believed in. Hidden things don’t stay hidden forever, though. Mine didn’t.

What finally broke the cycle wasn’t willpower. It was loss — the kind that strips away every excuse you’ve been leaning on and leaves you with a straight choice: stay stuck, or actually change. I chose to change. That choice led me through real recovery work, years of training, and a slow rebuilding — not just of behavior, but of the deeper places underneath it.

That’s the work I do now. I’m a Certified Addiction Technician, and I’ve spent much of the last twenty years serving as a pastoral counselor. My training spans addiction recovery through AASAT, narrative-focused trauma care through the Allender Center, and healing prayer and body-based approaches that go past just talking about what happened. I also draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and what neuroscience has taught us in recent years about how addiction actually rewires the brain — because understanding the mechanics of why you’re stuck matters as much as the spiritual and emotional work of getting unstuck. I lead group therapy and online recovery groups in addition to one-on-one sessions, because in my experience healing rarely happens in isolation — it happens in community, alongside people who’ve actually been where you are.

If you’re reading this because you’re stuck — because you’ve tried to white-knuckle your way out of something on your own and it hasn’t worked, or because trust has been broken in your marriage and you don’t know how to even start rebuilding it — I want you to know two things. First, you’re not the only one in the room who’s carried this. Second, there’s a path through it that’s more specific than “just try harder,” and I’d be glad to walk it with you.
